SURVIVAL.

This was certainly the need that drove Primitive Man northwards in search of food, encountering great cold, a cold for which he was totally unprepared. It was at that moment that they felt the need to protect themselves from the elements and it was at that moment that leather processing techniques began to make their first appearance, allowing our ancestors to save themselves from certain extinction. The aim of PROMETHEUS is to teach the history and prehistory behind the working of leather and hides, starting from PRIMITIVE MAN and ending with the contemporary work of HOMO SAPIENS.

COURSE PROGRAM

DAY 1 – PRIMITIVE LEATHER WORKING (MODULE ONE)

The objective of this day is to learn how to recognize, work with and use materials of animal origin to create tools and artifacts. The focus will be on making a container out of animal fur through the following practical phases:

  • Working with bones: smoothing on a stone to create tools such as awls and gravers.
  • Production of cordage and yarn: extraction, treatment and weaving of animal and vegetable tendons.
  • Sewing techniques: application of the knowledge acquired to assemble the animal fur container.

DAY 2 – PRIMITIVE TANNING OF SKINS (MODULE TWO)

The second module explores the different types of tanning, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Participants will learn:

  • Skinning techniques and skin preservation.
  • Extraction and processing of animal tendons: from the limb to the drying process.
  • Production of animal glue: extraction techniques and practical uses.

⚠️ The course involves the use of bovine limbs, which will be dismembered, skinned and dissected for practical activities. It is not suitable for those with a particularly sensitive stomach.
