WORKSHOP OF CONSTRUCTION OF HISTORICAL BOW, ARROWS AND STRING

The bow is one of the oldest hunting and war instruments on the planet, used by populations such as the American Indians, hunters and Turkish armies. Today, although it is no longer a modern weapon, it is used in sports and can be useful for survival in wild environments.

Building a bow allows you to learn the basics of woodworking, understanding the laws of physics that govern its shape, choice of materials, movement and power.

The workshop is open to anyone, even those who have never done manual work. We will start with the longitudinal cutting of a log, followed by roughing it out with the hatchet to give it its initial shape. The plane will be used to finish the work, while the jack knife and rasp will be used to shape the final form. By observing the tensed bow, it will be possible to identify the points to be modified to optimize the structure.

We will also make the bowstring and arrows, including the tips, which can be made of mild steel, flint or wood. We will complete the process by fletching the arrows. We will explain how to attach the different materials and, for flint tips, we will provide instructions on how to make homemade glue.

An area will be set up in the field to learn the basic techniques of archery.

Use of the longbow for hunting and defense.
Observation and choice of wood: fundamental for the efficiency of the bow.
Work tools: knowledge and correct use.
Beginning of the work: basic techniques for effective construction.

DAY 2

From 10:00 to 17:00

Completion and calibration of the bow.
Materials for making the bowstring: available resources and alternatives.
Construction of the bow: gut, nettle, dacron, linen and other materials.
Materials for the construction of arrows: selection of woods, points and fletching.
Finishing the bow and maintenance: techniques to increase its durability.
Shooting tests: learning the basic technique.
Conclusion, comments and awarding of diplomas.
